How to Apply

The Department of Anesthesiology participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Applications are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

If you are a medical student, contact your dean’s office for application details.

If you are an international student applying through ERAS, contact the ECFMG Office at erashelp@ecfmg.org or call (215) 386-5900.

If you are an international medical graduate, you are required to have ECFMG certification before applying to the program.

We accept a variety of visas but cannot guarantee sponsorship.

A complete residency application consists of the following, all of which are submitted through ERAS:

  • Completed application through ERAS
  • Personal statement
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Transcript from medical school
  • Letter from the dean of your medical school
  • At least three letters of recommendation, preferably one from an anesthesiologist.
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and 2 scores OR Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) 1 and 2 scores. Step 3 scores will be considered if available.

Applying to the Research Training Program(s)

If you are interested in the Washington University Scholars Program (WU Scholars) or the Academic Scholars Advancement Program (ASAP), make sure that one of the letters of recommendation you upload to ERAS is from your thesis advisor or research mentor.

In addition to the standard ERAS Application, please submit a one page statement to our Manager of Education Programs, Erin Wood, detailing your research background, possible future research interests, and an idea of your career plans.

We also ask applicants to these programs to attend a special interview day that includes a detailed look at our department’s research projects, our trainees and scientists, and our infrastructure.
