The National Institute of General and Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is funding a series of conferences focused on research and career development for scholars and mentors in anesthesiology. This grant was awarded to Dr. George Mashour at the University of Michigan and Dr. Michael Avidan at Washington University in St. Louis. The award of this grant owed much to the enthusiastic support of the academic anesthesiology community. Specifically, the grant was endorsed by the directors of all fifteen NIH-funded anesthesiology T32 programs, and enjoyed the backing of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS), the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA), and the Society for Academic Anesthesiology Associations (SAAA).

The R13-funded conferences will be arranged in partnership with both the International Anesthesia Research Society and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, and will be organized collaboratively with representatives of the Early Stage Anesthesiology Scholars (eSAS) initiative. Conferences will integrate anesthesiology T32 fellows nationwide as well as research-oriented anesthesiology scholars and will help them navigate the translational research continuum and turn their discoveries into benefits for patients and their communities. These conferences will promote NIH scientific goals by providing mentorship to early stage anesthesiology scholars, educating and engaging them in translational principles, enabling scientific collaborations, and stimulating new lines of research. The strategic goal of this R13 award is to help empower the current and upcoming generations of junior academic anesthesiologists so that we may continue to make innovative contributions to medicine and society.
